From Athletes For Hope New York Red Bull player Luke Sassano has visited with children from the Jubilee Center several times throughout the last two months - although, Luke hasn't done it all on his own. Through her aspirations to teach soccer and give back to young, underprivileged children, Celia Flynn and some of her HS soccer teammates have worked in tandem with Luke during his visits. During their time at the Center, Luke, Celia, and her teammates hung out with the kids and gave them pointers about how to pass, shoot and even head soccer balls. They have loved working with the kids and look forward to continuing their involvement throughout the rest of the summer! Hoboken Now, July 15, 2009 "It was outrageous -- an overwhelming success," said race organizer Scott DeLea this afternoon. "Last year we had 700 runners. We were hoping for 1,000 and ended up getting 1,200 people. It was by far the biggest race that we've had." The race raises money for the Hoboken Boys & Girls Club and the Hoboken Jubilee Center. DeLea said he is not sure how much the race raised yet. In fact, the 5K attracted so many runners that Party with Purpose ran out of race numbers just before race time. DeLea said no other race in Hoboken has attracted so many runners. Kids from both the Boys & Girls Club and the Jubilee Center participated in a 1-mile Kids Fun Run before the 5K. "I was talking to the kids before the race and half of them who there last night had never even been to Pier A," said DeLea. "I said to them, 'this is your park, enjoy it!' A group of 80 high school students on a mission trip from Knoxville, Tennessee came to Hoboken in an effort to help "The Church @ Hoboken" serve the local community. They offered their services to the Jubilee Center last week. The students along with their chaperones cleaned everything at the Center from the windows to the walls as well as offered homework help to the children. One of the high school students was quoted saying: "We were here a short time, but we came to really appreciate the kids here at the Jubilee Center". In addition to the interest and confidence that gardening offers to children, the Jubilee Gardens Project provides a hands-on gardening experience that will give the children a chance to learn an important life skill by planting items that will be used in the Center's cooking and nutrition class curriculums. The Gardens are located on the grounds of The Church of the Holy Innocents in Hoboken.
